  • LSC 100 | Building a National Network

The late 1980s and early 1990s marked one of the most significant periods in LSC’s history, transforming the business from a Victorian wholesaler into a truly national organisation.

In 1988, LSC opened its first interstate branch in North Parramatta, Sydney. Recognising the need for greater local support, increased stock holdings and dedicated sales resources in NSW, the new branch strengthened LSC’s ability to service locksmiths in Australia’s largest market. While the early years coincided with difficult economic conditions, the commitment of the founding team and strong industry relationships quickly established the branch as a trusted supplier.

Building on this momentum, LSC opened its QLD branch in Brisbane in April 1990. Launching during one of Australia’s toughest economic recessions was no small undertaking, but the branch flourished through the dedication of its people, the success of key product ranges such as Silca, and an increasing focus on marketing through comprehensive product catalogues, trade exhibitions and roadshows.

LSC’s expansion continued in 1991 with SA. Rather than opening a branch immediately, LSC partnered exclusively with Adrian and Bronwyn Johnson of Keylok Distributors. Their exceptional product knowledge, customer service and respected reputation within the locksmithing industry laid a strong foundation for LSC in South Australia. In 1996, following Adrian’s ill health, LSC assumed full ownership of the operation and formally established the Adelaide branch at its Gilbert Street location where we operated from until recently.

As LSC’s national footprint grew, so too did the business. By the mid-1990s, the company had established branches across Australia and distributor partnerships throughout New Zealand. After several years of rapid expansion, the focus shifted from growth to strengthening the business, refining operations and continuing to raise the standard of service offered to customers.

The security industry was also evolving. LSC embraced these challenges, continually investing in its people, customer support and industry relationships.

Throughout this period, Silca continued to play a pivotal role in LSC’s growth. Having partnered with the Italian manufacturer since the late 1970s, LSC helped establish Silca as one of Australia’s leading key cutting brands. Supported by continuous product innovation, from key blanks through to advanced mechanical and electronic key cutting machines, Silca became an essential part of many locksmith businesses.

By the end of the 1990s, LSC had successfully evolved from a Melbourne-based family business into a national leader serving locksmiths and security professionals across Australia. The expansion of its branch network, combined with a commitment to customer service, trusted supplier partnerships and continuous improvement, laid the foundations for the next chapter of growth as the industry entered a new era of technology and innovation.
