  • Australia's Best Young Locksmith 2024 | Fourth Finalist Announced
Solar City Locksmiths | Shepparton, VIC

Please provide a short personal biography about yourself.

My name is Keegan Moylan, I am a Locksmith at Solar City Locksmiths in Shepparton. I pride myself on being a very capable but ever-learning Locksmith, always looking to push myself further and learn more in the trade and general working environment. I've always had an interest for how mechanical and electrical components work, which is what led me to locksmithing.

During my career I've spent time in the music industry, including servicing and building instruments, prior to locksmithing I worked as an electronic security technician, which gained my interest in general security solutions for customers. The itch for something more mechanical led me to locksmithing, where I've spent years training, practising and keeping up with industry changes, including the push towards more electronic access control.

What are some of the skills & abilities necessary for someone to succeed as a locksmith?

You have to be weird! The best skill as a locksmith in my opinion is the itch to understand more about how something works (The type of kid that pulled things apart for fun) I strongly believe this is an interest/skill that cannot be taught. In my opinion Locksmiths also require a high attention to detail, and over all patience/perseverance.

What key issues do you think will affect the locksmith industry in the coming decade? And how do you think these should be approached?

The increase in "DIY" videos and information is dangerous to not only the locksmithing industry but also the consumer. The increase in public information available is allowing a lot more incompetent "Tradesmen" to claim their abilities as locksmiths, losing the consumers trust in the industry. I believe the only fix to this problem is to make Locksmiths a "Qualified only" type of trade, no different to electricians or plumbers, holding locksmiths responsible for their quality of work, and increasing compliance of works completed.

Tell us why you should be Australia's Best Young Locksmith.

The only reason I should be Australia's best young locksmith is to set an example to anyone else entering or starting in the trade, I've put myself in a good position over my career so far as a locksmith, and would like to encourage other young locksmiths to do the same, and show that hard work and dedication does pay off.
